Foreign Language Department

The Foreign Language Department at Cardinal Hayes High School offers a traditional program of required courses in Spanish and French. Courses include levels 1, 2 and 3 with a required comprehensive exam during level 3 in order to be eligible for an advanced Regents diploma. Students begin taking foreign languages in grades 9 or 10 with the Level 1 courses. Incoming freshmen on the Honors Track are programmed into the French 1 course. The teachers are all native speakers or very well-versed in the languages they teach. Non Native classes are generally conducted in English with some simultaneous translating. Levels 2 and 3 Native courses in Spanish are conducted primarily in Spanish. All staff use diverse teaching methods, including oral repetition, individual response exercises, writing exercises, workbook exercises and reading of passages, which emphasize the four language learning skills, reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Teachers also incorporate basic aspects of culture into weekly classroom discussions and lesson plans.
